UNPOG Head at International Identity Management Conference

Mr. Jae-hong Lim, Head of United Nations Project Office on Governance, Division for Public Administration and Development Management, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNPOG/DPADM/UNDESA), made a presentation on 23 September 2014 at the International Identity Management Conference, which was held in Seoul, Republic of Korea on 23-25 September 2014. Mr. Lim presented on the topic of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) within the context of Post-2015 Development Agenda and Good Governance. In his presentation, Mr. Lim highlighted the importance of CRVS in Post-2015 Development Agenda from UN’s perspective, and then showed the regional trends, challenges, and initiatives of CRVS in Asia and the Pacific. He touched upon the relationship between CRVS and governance, emphasizing the important role of ICT and e-government in generating reliable and timely vital statistics that would ultimately improve public services through whole-of-government approach. He wrapped up his presentation by noting the readiness of UNPOG to contribute to the improvement of CRVS by assisting member states in enhancing their e-government capacity.
The International Identity Management Conference (Id-M Conference), consisting of two day conference and one day ministerial meeting, was organized by the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the Ministry of Security and Public Administration (MOSPA) of Republic of Korea, with an objective of creating synergies and disseminating specialized knowledge regarding the conceptual and practical complexities involved in modernizing personal identity and identification system. The Conference was attended by total of approximately 200 participants from 30 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, including ministers, vice ministers and senior government officials, as well as experts from international organizations and academia in the field of CRVS. During the Ministerial Session, the Seoul declaration on Id-M, signed by attending ministers, was delivered, reaffirming the commitment to ensure universal and timely registration and legal identity for all.
