Meeting with Korea Local Information Research and Development Institute (KLID)

The delegation from KLID, headed by the Director of External Cooperation Division, Mr. Sang-Baek Chris Kang, visited UNPOG on 4 January 2017 to discuss about future cooperation. Both sides briefly introduced their priority work in  2017, and then exchanged views on how to better collaborate in areas of common interests such as  advancing e-government development at  local levels, localizing SDGs and enhancing  policy coordination through e-government for SDG implementation. Mr. Kang informed that KLID is planning to implement a  project of developing  indices to evaluate  local e-government development, particularly in assessing the readiness  of smart city. UNPOG staff expressed interests to be engaged in this project due to the importance of enhancing capacity of government officials at local levels for SDG implementation. They also discussed about concerns of data security and personal data protection as related to smart city applications. 

During the meeting, UNPOG introduced the ongoing capacity needs assessment of of government institutions to implement the 2030 Agenda and identification of priority areas for capacity development in the Asia and Pacific region and Eastern Africa, and the training modules to be developed based on the outcome of the capacity needs assessment. In connection with the module-based trainings for government officials from central as well as local governments, UNPOG consulted with Mr. Kang about the possibility to seek the support from KLID to use their training facilities. 

As a follow-up to this consultation meeting, both sides agreed to schedule a high-level meeting between the vice president of KLID and new Head of UNPOG for reaching an agreement for bilateral cooperation.
