2026 Online Workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Resilience Draws Record Participation to Advance Whole-of-Society Resilience Approaches May 20, 2026

Virtual, 14 May 2026 - The United Nations Project Office on Governance (UNPOG), of the Division for Public Institutions and Digital Government (DPIDG) of UN DESA, in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR ONEA & GETI), UNITAR CIFAL Jeju/JITC, and the United Nations Environment Programme Climate Technology Centre and Network (UNEP CTCN), successfully convened the 2026 Online Workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Resilience from 12 to 14 May 2026.

The workshop brought together a total of 2,154 participants and attracted more than 5,000 registrations, making it the highest-attended edition of the programme to date. The event convened government officials, experts, practitioners, representatives of international organisations, academia, civil society and the private sector to strengthen capacities for inclusive and risk-informed approaches to disaster risk reduction and climate resilience.

This year’s programme was structured around three key thematic components. The first focused on inclusive resilience-building through gender-responsive and disability-inclusive approaches to disaster risk reduction. Participants examined practical tools such as the Disaster Resilience Scorecard for Cities and explored country examples demonstrating how inclusive policies and planning can strengthen community resilience.

The second session emphasised strengthening public institutions and policy planning through the integration of strategic foresight methodologies for climate action. It highlighted the importance of forward-looking governance approaches to help institutions better anticipate, prepare for and respond to increasingly complex climate and disaster risks.

The third session explored ways to catalyse private sector engagement and leverage climate technology solutions to support disaster risk reduction and climate resilience. Discussions highlighted innovative partnerships, technology-driven solutions and opportunities to mobilise investments that contribute to long-term resilience and sustainable development outcomes.

Across the three-day programme, the workshop equipped participants with practical knowledge, tools and approaches that can be adapted within their respective institutional and national contexts. Through interactive discussions and peer exchange, participants shared experiences and lessons learned on advancing whole-of-society approaches to resilience.
